Bengaluru, India - In a freak mishap, a 45-year-old man was mowed down by a speeding auto in the Old City on Sunday. The incident occurred when one Jangaiah, working as a labourer, was crossing the road when he was run over by the auto at Shamsheer Gunj in Shalibanda.
The accident was captured by a surveillance camera installed at a traffic signal near the accident spot. The footage showed the front part of the auto-rickshaw got up in the air before hitting the pedestrian and the front wheel of the three-wheeler coming out apparently after which the auto driver may have lost control over the vehicle.
Jangaiah collapsed and died before locals gathered to rescue him. Shalibanda police rushed to the spot and took custody of the auto driver and sent the body to Osmania General Hospital for an autopsy.
The auto was overloaded carrying five passengers including two men sharing the driverâs seat when the accident took place.
Shalibanda SI Prathap Reddy said the deceased is survived by wife, two daughters and a son. A case has been booked against the driver for causing death due to negligence.
Footage of the CCTV has been recovered and the accused along with the auto has been taken into custody for further investigation, said the SI.
